With the centenary of 1916 just around the corner you would be forgiven for thinking that the books have all been written and the story already told. But every so often a new volume appears, with a different angle or slant on this important event in Irish history.

During the 1916 Easter Rising and later in the War of Independence from 1917-1921, Offaly was much to the forefront. Yet as the centenary of the Rising approaches not much is recorded of the men and women from Offaly who played such an important part. This book is the story of one man's Odyssey. Tullamore man, Peadar Bracken from a Stonemason in 1900, rose to the hightest ranks of Irish Republicanism in Offaly between 1914 and 1921.

The author hopes this biography, based on his father's life and times, will fill in the many gaps that exist in the history of the period. More importantly it will shed light on the activities that took place in the midlands, events often ignored or forgotten.

Many men and women risked their lives during this turbulent period. Some paid the extreme penalty of death. This is the story of one who such man who played an active role in the founding of the Irish Republic.
